Research Fellows
The Board approved to name the following as Research Fellows for 2009-2012: Joaquim Bento Ferreira-Filho For his outstanding contributions to applied general equilibrium analysis of policy issues affecting Brazil. Angelo Gurgel For his contributions in extending the GTAP data and modeling system through leading an effort to investigate tax data in GTAP and to develop a more consistent treatment of taxes across countries using other data sources. David Laborde For outstanding contributions to the analysis of the Doha Development Agenda using the MAcMap data base and for instrumental contribution to GTAP border protection dataset, and innovative CGE modeling works. Rod Tyers For his contributions to the modeling of demographic changes using the Dynamic GTAP Model, and for his previous contributions to the labor data in the GTAP Data Base. Ernesto Valenzuela For his work on the World Bank project "Distortions to Agricultural Incentives", which covered 75 countries from 1955 to 2007.

Research Fellows

The Board approved to name the following as Research Fellows for 2009-2012:

For his outstanding contributions to applied general equilibrium analysis of policy issues affecting Brazil.

For his contributions in extending the GTAP data and modeling system through leading an effort to investigate tax data in GTAP and to develop a more consistent treatment of taxes across countries using other data sources.

Alan A. Powell Award
Each year at the GTAP Advisory Board meeting we present an award to one of the members of the Board in recognition of outstanding service. This award is in honor of one of the Founding Members of the Advisory Board, and the intellectual grandfather of GTAP - Alan A. Powell. This year's recipient of the Alan A. Powell Award is Gaspar Frontini, an individual who embodies the spirit of the GTAP effort and is a big supporter of public goods provision, as well as training and expansion of the network - particularly in developing countries. Gaspar first came to the 2005 GTAP conference in Germany, where he was plied with beer and conversation and taken on the lovely pre-conference sailing trip with board and network members. He quickly picked up on the spirit of the project, and engineered the Commission's rejoining the GTAP Consortium. From this position, he immediately jumped in with both feet, and in the Addis Ababa board meeting, he, along with representatives from the ECA and the World Bank, promoted the idea of a special Africa project for GTAP. His support of that work has paid big dividends for GTAP in Africa. Gaspar has also played a key role in strengthening GTAP's presence within Europe in general and the European Commission in particular. His championing of the new I-O tables for Europe has been critical in the future credibility of research in the region. He has also been a vocal supporter of frontier research on services trade and FDI. In short, the GTAP Network is significantly better off in the wake of Gaspar's involvement on the Advisory Board; he is a worthy recipient of the Alan A. Powell Award. Thank you Gaspar for your many contributions to GTAP!
