"WTO Negotiations and the MENA Region: A Preliminary Appraisal"
by Bayar, Ali, Ghazi Ben-Ahmed and Raed Safadi

Abstract
This paper discusses some of the issues important to the Middle East and North African (MENA) countries regarding the WTO negotiations and assesses the possible economic effects of further liberalization on the MENA region.
The eight previous rounds of multilateral trade negotiations under the GATT/WTO have played a key role in stimulating the growth of international trade and globalisation. Can a new multilateral liberalization round boost the world economy, the MENA economies in particular? What would be the potential economic impacts of a new WTO trade round on the MENA region? A great number of scenarios can be imagined on the process of the negotiations and their outcome. As a first attempt, we consider a small number of preliminary scenarios. The focus is on the MENA region.
