"Family Planning, Human Development and Growth in Uganda "
by Kinnunen, Jouko, Hans Lofgren and Dino Merotto

Abstract
In this paper, we present a demographic extension of MAMS (Maquette for MDG Simulations), a CGE model for development strategy analysis developed at the World Bank. We study the effects of family planning on the economic development of Uganda. We show that under different government closures and family planning cost estimates, these family planning measures, which all reduce the extremely high fertility in Uganda, are clearly welfare improving. In addition, from the narrower point of view of public expenditure, increased family planning reduces the total government outlays markedly in the medium to long run. We hope that this paper contributes to an increased interest in integrating demographic and economic models.
