"Weather and Child Health in Rural Nigeria"
by Rabassa, Mariano and Emmanuel Skoufias

Abstract
In rural areas dependent on agricultural production, rainfall variability is critical for subsistence. This is especially true in West Africa, where agriculture is mainly rain-fed. A number of papers have already suggested the influence that geography and climate have on economic development (Bloom and Sachs, 1998; Masters and Sachs, 2001). Besides the common argument of inadequate institutional development to explain the poor performance of Africa relative to other developing regions, there is a growing agreement among scholars that other aspects of tropical geography, demography, and public health have strong influences on the continent’s economic performance. For instance, long-term rainfall fluctuations correlate well with the economic cycles of many Sub-Saharan countries; and it has been shown that the economic slowdown that started in the late 1970s (and lasted for more than two decades), is partially explained by the rainfall deficiencies that the continent experienced relative to other parts of the globe (Barrios, Bertinelli, and Strobl, 2010).
