Abstract The study examined the socioeconomic characteristics of respondents and safety practices of fresh fish sellers in the studied area. Primary data were used to accomplish the objectives of the study. Data were generated through copies of a questionnaire administered to one hundred and twenty respondents who were selected by multistage random sampling. Budgetary tools, descriptive statistics were applied to data collected. Identified safety practices of fresh fish sellers were washing, packaging with loose poly bags, smoking, drying, regular cold room visit strategy and selling off at reduced price at the closing hour of the market. Identified safety challenges were presence of flies, rapid deterioration, finance, and irregular power supply because the cold rooms were sparsely distributed and some could not afford deep fridge .Average temperature was outside the ideal and visitation by safety officers was irregular and inadequate and consumers of fresh frozen fish had the likelihood of facing health challenges from mesophylls. The study concluded that most safety practices were traditional, inadequate and possibility exist for reintroduction of agent of contamination and food poison during marketing of fresh fish in the study area Keywords: Fish, Food, Safety, Marketing, Tropical conditions |
