"Taking into account affordable and healthy diets: Implications for sustainable development"
by Wang, Xiaoxi, Hao Cai, Jiaqi Xuan, Wencong Lu and Hermann Lotze-Campen

Abstract
China’s current dietary pattern needs a profound transformation considering its entanglement with economic, environmental, and health impacts. The existing literature approaches this question either by considering environmental sustainability and food security or by investing impacts on food affordability and nutritional adequacy. To fill the void to jointly consider the economic, environmental, and health impacts, this study first develops a model of healthy, affordable, and sustainable diets (HASDiets) by taking into account adequacy of nutrient intake, food affordability, environmental impacts, and stickiness of dietary transition from status quo. We then couple it with a spatially explicit agro-economic and land system model (Model of Agricultural Production and its Impact on the Environment – MAgPIE) in an iterative mode to assess the economic, environmental, and health implications of dietary patterns (i.e., HASDiets, HASDiets+, HASDiets-FLX) provided by HASDiets. Our results show that finding an ideal diet basket is challenging due to the trade-offs between affordability, health, and sustainability, but improving the current dietary patterns of China is feasible and can significantly contribute to achieving China's sustainable development goals while reducing food expenditures and health risks at the same time.
