"Sudan’s Agrifood System: Structure and Drivers of Transformation" by Diao, Xinshen, Karl Pauw, Mariam Raouf, Khalid Siddig and James Thurlow Abstract Based on a set of Sudan’s economywide databases with detailed agriculture representation, this study diagnoses Sudan’s agrifood system transformation against a background of broad economic growth and transformation. Sudan’s agrifood GDP observes modest growth during 2011-2019, while the agrifood system lacks transformation with little change in the structure of the system. Agricultural share of total employment fell more significantly, contributing to the structural change in the broad economy, while agriculture continuously absorbs near a half of Sudan’s total employment with the lowest labor productivity, and it is still the largest component of the agrifood system. Sudan’s agrifood growth was mainly driven by domestic-market-oriented value chains due to their large size and above-average growth, while exportable and importable value chains are small, and with below-average growth. Comparing sources of future growth using the IFPRI’s RIAPA model shows that fruits, root crops, and cereals rank highly in the combined outcome scores, while livestock is one of few value chains with impacts on all the four outcomes. |
