"Global Land Cover Changes under Changing Climate and Socioeconomic Conditions from 2001 to 2020" by Chen, Shuo, Qianlai Zhuang, Ye Yuan and Lauren Benavidez Abstract This study examines the land cover changes under changing climate and socioeconomic conditions at the global scale from 2001 to 2020 and aims to develop a new benchmark land use database for the GTAP-BIO model (Baldos & Corong, 2020). Accordingly, we first classified all countries into 19 regions, utilizing the geographical aggregation of this model to depict global land use. We then quantified the global land cover area from 2001 to 2020 using MODIS Collection 6.1 Global Land Cover Classification Systems (LCCS) Land Cover Types product (MCD12Q1) in 500 m resolution for each region and compared their changes in each year over 2001 to 2020. The MCD12Q1 product was developed by NASA and has been adopted by the FAOSTAT land cover domain as a data source for its comprehensive coverage and accuracy. Then, we developed various statistics to quantify and analyze land use and its changes over time from different perspectives: 1) annual area changes and their averages over time for each land category; 2) location and area of long-term land cover conversions; and 3) sources and fates of land cover change. Additionally, we produced maps at the grid cell level to provide detailed spatial analysis. This paper using a unique approach analyses land cover changes at the global scale using satellite data for 20 years. This research aims to address the following three questions: (1) Which land cover classes and which countries have undergone the greatest changes from 2001 to 2020? (2) What were the conversion directions of land cover classes from 2001 to 2020 in those countries that have undergone the greatest changes? (3) What was the driver of land cover changes from 2001 to 2020? |
