"Effect of women entrepreneurship and ICT on bilateral trade in Africa: Evidence from a panel study using the extended gravity model" by Rigoberte Carine, Koko A Bidias, William Mougnol and Mvele Sigismond Hevey Abstract Women entrepreneurs and ICT bring new perspectives, skills and innovative ideas that can boost trade between African countries. This paper examines the effect of female entrepreneurship and ICT on bilateral trade, using a sample of 32 African countries over the period 2005-2019. Adopting the Poisson estimator of Pseudo maximum likelihood with high-dimensional fixed effects (PPMLHDFE). Two results emerge: first, female entrepreneurship (paid in minimum, entrepreneurship (self-employment) have a positive and significant impact on the evolution of bilateral trade in Africa. Secondly, adoption of ICT has a positive effect on bilateral trade flows of goods through the reduction of transaction costs. In terms of economic policy implications, it is therefore essential to support and encourage female entrepreneurship in Africa. This can be done by providing equitable access to finance, building women's entrepreneurial capacity, promoting gender equality in economic policies and fostering the creation of business networks for women entrepreneurs. We also recommend that government and private sector should enhance digital infrastructure thereby expanding network coverage especially in rural areas and making it accessible to every user. This will encourage public-private partnership. Also, integrate digital literacy and entrepreneurial skills in the educational sector and provide training for existing entrepreneurs. In addition, the government should develop e-government platforms and access to government services, this can help female entrepreneurs to reach wider markets. |
