"Impacts of Global Greenhouse Gas Mitigation on Heterogeneous Livestock Sectors"
by Golub, Alla, Maksym Chepeliev, Thiago Simonato, Carlos Gonzalez Fischer, Daniel Mason-D'Croz and Dominique van der Mensbrugghe

Abstract
Methane is a powerful, short-lived, and the second most abundant anthropogenic GHG after carbon dioxide. Under the Global Methane Pledge initiative, launched at COP26 in November 2021, 159 participating countries committed to cut global methane emissions 30% below 2020 levels by 2030. We evaluate the economic and environmental implications of the Global Methane Pledge, focusing on global livestock sectors. These major contributors of the methane emissions are characterized by a huge variation in emission intensities across livestock products, production systems, and regions. Key methodological contribution of this work is the development of a global economic data base with a detailed representation of the livestock sectors. On the supply side, we quantify changes in emission intensities and investigate the implications of changing production practices and substitution among different production systems. On the demand side, we quantify changes in food prices and explore the implications of changing diets – a reduction in the per capita consumption of red meat with a potential substitution by other food commodities.
