"U.S. agricultural and biofuel markets: Short- and medium- term challenges and opportunities"
by Taheripour, Farzad and Rayan Wolf

Abstract
This study examines the implications of increased demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and reductions in the U.S. agricultural exports due to a trade war for the U.S. agriculture. It then considers production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) that could compensate the effects of increased demand for EVs and reduction in exports of agricultural products. Utilizing an enhanced GTAP-BIO computable general equilibrium model, we simulate three experiments. Experiment I, a medium-term increase in EV demand reaching 75 million units by 2035. Experiment II, the same EV expansion coupled with global agricultural tariffs. Experiment III, the second experiment augmented by an additional 1.5 billion gallons of corn-based SAF production. Results indicate that: 1) EV adoption reduces demand for biofuels, leading to decreased corn and soybean outputs; 2) trade ware could significantly harm the US agriculture; and 3) SAF production can partially reduce the harmful effects of the trade war.
