"Trade Facilitation and Food Security in Jordan: Addressing Non-Tariff Barriers Amid Regional Crises" by Ashour, Sara Abstract Jordan’s food security is increasingly vulnerable due to high import dependence, regional crises, and burdensome non-tariff measures (NTMs). Although NTMs aim to ensure food safety, they often raise trade costs and disrupt agri-food supply chains, especially during geopolitical shocks. With 90% of essential food items imported and 64% of firms reporting procedural trade barriers, Jordan’s resilience is critically challenged. This study employs a static single-country Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model using a 2021 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) to analyze the impact of reducing transport related NTMs on economic welfare and food availability. Three scenarios simulate improved transportation efficiency and reduced trade costs, focusing on the potential reopening of the Nassib-Jaber land border with Syria. Results indicate that reducing trade costs through land transport improvements could considerably enhance food affordability, benefiting low-income and rural households. The study emphasizes the strategic role of trade facilitation and regional cooperation in strengthening food system resilience in small, import-dependent economies facing polycrises. |
