"Anatomy of the Global Beef Value Chain: A GTAP-Based Value-Added Decomposition" Authors: Yoo, Jeongho Abstract This study provides a value-added decomposition of the global beef value chain using the GTAP Data Base (versions 10 and 11), covering 2014 and 2017. Applying the Wang–Wei–Zhu (WWZ) gross exports decomposition to a GTAP-based multi-region input–output table, the analysis traces how domestic and foreign value added embodied in beef exports is generated, transmitted, and absorbed in final demand. The results reveal that beef exports are predominantly driven by domestic value added (approximately 79–80 percent), substantially exceeding the all-sector average and reflecting the geographically anchored nature of cattle production. The foreign value added component is sourced overwhelmingly from third countries rather than direct importers, with business services and energy consistently ranking as the largest upstream foreign inputs across all major exporters. Major exporting economies display distinct structural archetypes, where resource-abundant exporters such as Brazil and Australia exhibit very high domestic content while European processing hubs and North American integrated producers show elevated foreign value added reflecting regional input networks. Pure double counting is remarkably low compared to manufacturing, confirming that gross beef trade statistics provide a relatively close approximation of genuine value-added flows. Together, these findings carry implications for how competitiveness, structural vulnerability, and policy leverage are assessed in the global beef sector. |
