"Sustaining agricultural growth through food processing development: A CGE analysis for Benin" by Kinkpe, Thierry, Jonas Luckmann and Harald Grethe Abstract Agricultural development without value chain and market development may lead to a decline of agricultural prices and may affect farmers negatively. In that regard, food processing is an activity adding value to agricultural commodities and may open additional marketing possibilities. One of the important constraints of its development is the lack of stable electricity supply in many developing countries. This paper addresses this problem by simulating food processing development in Benin as example. A 2019 SAM for Benin is used for the analyses based on a single country CGE model. A simulation is implemented: an increase in stable electricity supply for food processing. Supplying more stable electricity to food processing replaces more expensive alternative energy sources and thus fosters the growth of food processing activities, generating more demand for agricultural commodities. This induces an increase in agricultural prices and hence production and demand for agricultural production factors. |
