"Carbon leakage resulting from afforestation in the UK" by Golub, Alla, Uris Lantz Baldos, Brett Day and Sabrina Eisenbarth Abstract Afforestation is an important tool in the climate change mitigation toolbox. We use a computable general equilibrium model and investigate the effects of a 1.5 million hectares afforestation program in the UK. While afforestation helps the UK achieve this individual net zero objective, we show that it leads to land use change and expanded agricultural production abroad. The resulting increase in emissions outside the UK reduces greenhouse gas mitigation benefits from the UK afforestation program. Carbon leakage via land use change abroad amounts to 25% percent of the carbon mitigated via afforestation in the UK. |
