"Exports Duration in Africa: The Importance of Economic Integration Agreements"
by Adou, Niango Sika Brice

Abstract
Given that exporters are more productive than non-exporters, a growing body of the literature focuses on the dynamics of exporters in the international market. This paper examines the effects of economic integration agreements on export duration in Africa. The study uses a more disaggregated data at the sectoral level between 1996 to 2020 to explore exports lifetime. Results show that Africa is not different from other continent in terms of trade duration as the relationships are short-lived. On average, 45 percent of trade relationships created reach the second year of exercise. There are disparities in rates between countries and regions within the continent. We use a discrete-time proportional hazard model and show that initial value of trade, foreign investments and experience are key factors that influence the duration of trade. Agreements such as AGOA and ACP-EU have a mixed effects on exports survival. Economic Agreements in the continent do influence the survival rates but the effects and the magnitude are mixed. In the implementation of the AfCFTA agreement this study suggests a better integration of African countries in the international trade and promote intra-African investments framework that enables tied trade links
