"What if trade could enhance global sustainability? The SmartLinker Platform as a cooperative AI"

Abstract
This paper explores how trade could support global sustainability. Within the FABLE Consortium, we have run collaborative global exercises to reconcile national objectives with global sustainability called "Scenathons". Local researchers design quantitative national pathways and compare the aggregated global results with several global sustainability targets. Countries not represented in the Consortium are aggregated into “rest of” continental regions. Gaps in the global targets indicate that more significant changes are required, and national and regional pathways need to be revised accordingly. International trade is a critical component of this exercise. Before the results can be aggregated to the global level and compared with global targets, trade assumptions from countries and regions need to be corrected to ensure the equilibrium between total imports and total exports for each commodity in all time steps. To support this process, we developed a new multi-agent platform based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), the SmartLinker Platform (SLP), to compute bilateral trade flows compatible with projected demands from independent countries and regional models, aiming to optimize global sustainability targets. Here we present our methods and the initial results of a case study on international beef trade. Our work shows that, while respecting the countries' integrated plans, SLP can enhance global sustainability by maximizing the benefits of their collaboration towards the fulfilment of national and global targets.
