"Optimizing Nutrient Management: A Cross-Border Analysis of Manure Trade Policies in NorthWestern-European Agriculture" by Diallo, Mariam Amadou, Andrea Bral, Marijke D'Haese and Jeroen Buysse Abstract The study presents a model analysing nutrient supply and demand from animal manure across Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Denmark, Germany, and Luxemburg. It examines how differing manure trade policies in Northwest Europe impact nutrient allocation and associated costs for the agricultural sector. Three scenarios, ranging from restricted trade to liberalized trade without borders, were evaluated. Results indicate that gradual liberalization leads to increased nitrogen export, decreased denitrification, and reduced costs for nutrient abatement. The Netherlands and Flanders emerge as major exporters, with the Netherlands mainly exporting to Germany and Flanders exporting to France and Wallonia. Changes in nutrient pressure are observed, with Wallonia and parts of Flanders experiencing increased pressure, while the Netherlands sees a decrease. Different agricultural sectors face varied consequences, with the livestock sector benefiting from lower disposal costs in the Netherlands and parts of Flanders, while crop production suffers lower revenues. |
