"The EU Deforestation Regulation and Cocoa: Whats the Impact?" by Boysen, Ole Abstract The introduction of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) has significant implications for the cocoa supply chain, potentially affecting production, prices, trade patterns, and ultimately, farmer incomes. The EUDR aims to minimize deforestation and forest degradation caused by EU consumption by requiring importers to provide proof that the raw materials for cocoa and other products are not associated with deforestation or forest degradation. This regulation could lead to dramatic shifts in trade patterns across the globe, as producing countries may or may not adapt to become EUDR-compliant. The study develops a global, bilateral trade and market model for cocoa and semi-processed cocoa products to investigate the potential impacts of the EUDR. Counterfactual scenarios are used to simulate different narratives regarding the introduction of the EUDR, combined with price policies introduced by major cocoa-producing countries. The study's results will provide valuable insights for stakeholders in the cocoa market, offering a better understanding of the potential alternative outcomes of this important policy change. |
