"Trade-offs in the Wake of Climate Change: Mitigation Strategies and Their Impact on Poverty, Gender, and Growth" by Escalante, Luis and Valeria Pineiro Abstract Climate change continues to threaten the livelihoods of farmers and individuals who rely on predictable weather patterns. In Colombia, as in many developing economies, the situation of women agricultural workers is of particular concern, as they are less resilient and have fewer economic opportunities. However, understanding the climate change-gender nexus and its sectoral and socioeconomic impacts is challenging. Using a gender-sensitive Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model, we analyze climate change impacts on Colombia's economy and simulate policies aligning pro-gender and pro-climate change strategies. The results reveal that climate-driven exacerbation significantly affects female farmers, reducing their productivity and livelihood potential, highlighting the need for mitigation measures. The inclusion of microfinance, climate-smart technologies, and conditional cash transfers are promising approaches to complement climate adaptation policies. Deploying these multifaceted and sustainable policies is crucial to address persistent gender inequalities and the growing challenges of climate change. |
