"Chapter 8L: Mauritius" by Niwemahoro, Celine Abstract The data used in preparing the GTAP input-output table for the Mauritius economy came from the 2018 Supply and Use Table (SUT) and Input-Output Table (IOT) and was provided by the National Accounts Unit at the Statistics Mauritius. The Mauritius IOT is grouped commodity by commodity and includes 26 sectors. The unit in which the original SUT and OIT were compiled is in millions of Mauritian rupees (Rs M). The provided data were highly aggregated. As the mapping with the GTAP sectoral classification requires at least 30 sectors in the original IOT, the source table was disaggregated, and a new 2018 IOT for Mauritius with 58 sectors was created. The RAS method was applied to rebalance the newly created IOT. In the original Mauritius I-O table, there was only a column vector for total imports by commodity. Following the procedure suggested by Huff, McDougall and Walmsley (2000), an import matrix was constructed by multiplying the pro-rated total use matrix by the import vector. A domestic matrix was then created by subtracting the import matrix from the total use matrix. Original Mauritius provides data on the value-added matrix for labour and capital, but there is no information on returns to agricultural land. The series for returns to land was set to zero. Net taxes on products were provided in a column vector by commodity in the Mauritius original IOT. Following the procedure suggested by Huff et al. 2000, a net taxes on product matrix was constructed by multiplying the pro-rated total use matrix by net taxes on product vector. |
