Biography
Curriculum Vitae - Gunajit Kalita

I am a macroeconomist with 10 years of research experience in labour economics, long-run productivity growth, mining, energy, commodities and macroeconometric models. I have extensive experience of conducting studies to answers business as well as policy related questions using both primary and secondary data. I have acquired in-depth technical knowledge on working with India’s large micro-databases like NSS unit level database on Employment, Consumption expenditure and Annual Surveys of Industries for manufacturing sector etc. I believe my practical knowledge on handling large datasets using econometric software like STATA and experience of publishing academic work will be apt for this role.

I have been part of the Economics team within Rio Tinto since May, 2011 based in India. In my current role, I have helped the company to understand the future dynamics of growth in India. This involved understanding different aspects of growth in Indian economy, income distribution, structural changes and the changing composition of the economy with a view to explore the evolving demand for resource intensive sectors. My major contributions have been through (1) development of a macroeconometric framework to understand India’s future growth pathways;(2) creating a bottom-up demand model for India’s Steel demand;(3) estimating current metal intensities in India’s B&C sector and (4) estimation of infrastructure development in India.

Prior to this I have worked at ICRIER(a research think tank based in India) for 4 years, where my primary focus was employment growth and competitiveness of Indian manufacturing sector, productivity growth in Indian economy and trade policy reform. I was the integral part of India KLEMS step-up when we started back in 2009 at ICRIER. India KLEMS database was developed with me being at the core of data management under the leadership and training from Prof K.L. Krishna and Prof. B.N Goldar.
