Biography Being my first experience in using the GEMPACK based CGE modeling software, I am intrinsically motivated to apply the knowledge and skills to be gained from attending the 2011 African Short Course in Global Trade Analysis to analyze the impacts of global and regional trade policies (e.g., WTO, COMESA etc.) and climate change on smallholder vegetable production, consumption and livelihood in Eastern and Southern Africa and by extension to other operational regions of AVRDC. Vegetables are perhaps the only food source that can be used to solve the double burden of malnutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa. Against this background, I intend to specifically use the GTAP model to analyze food security in the context of not just provision of calories accrued from staples but also in terms of nutritional security provided through supplementing staples with adequate consumption of vegetables to ensure balanced diets for good health. The ultimate objective is to engage policy makers in dialogue on the findings of the study with a bit to get their buy-in in adopting applicable recommendations. |
