Biography
Patrick Osakwe holds a Ph.D degree in Economics from Queen's University, Canada. He is currently Head of the Trade, Poverty and Inequalities Branch (Director level) at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Geneva, Switzerland. Before joining UNCTAD, he was Chief of Finance, Industry and Investment at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa. He was Leader of the Trade Policy Analysis Team at UNECA for several years during which he played a key role in the establishment and management of the African Trade Policy Centre. He has also worked as a Senior Analyst at the Bank of Canada, Ottawa. Patrick has done extensive research in international and development economics and has refereed publications in economic journals such as: Journal of International Economics, Review of International Economics, Agricultural Economics, Journal of Asian Economics, The World Economy, Development Policy Review, Journal of African Trade, Applied Econometrics and International Development, and African Integration Review. He has also contributed chapters in books published by Edward Elgar Publishing, Ashgate Publishing, Blackwell Publishing, Maissoneuve and Larose, Food and Agriculture Organisation, Agricultural Economics Research Institute at the Hague, and the United Nations. Patrick has presented papers at conferences organized by the following professional groups: European Economic Association; Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Global Trade Analysis Project; Canadian Economics Association; African Economic Research Consortium; OECD; Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association; the Global Development Network; Network of America Central Bank Researchers; African Economic Conference; the African Union Commission, and the World Commission on the Social Dimensions of Globalization. He has won several academic awards, prizes, and fellowships. He is a valedictorian, a fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society, and a former member of the editorial boards of the journal "International Development Policy" published by the Graduate Institute, Geneva, and the Journal of African Development.
