"Sudan’s ongoing conflict impact on economic output and poverty" by Khalid Siddig, Mariam Raouf and Mosab Ahmed Abstract The ongoing conflict in Sudan, starting April 2023, has led to dire economic repercussions. Using a Social Accounting Matrix Multiplier model based on 2021 statistics, our study projects that continued warfare could drive up to 1.8 million into poverty and slash GDP by 48% by year-end. The agrifood system is expected to suffer a 22% decline, and labor income could fall by 50.8%. These grim forecasts underscore the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to prevent further socio-economic decline and avert a rise in the national poverty rate, projected to increase by 4.5 percentage points. With the SAF and RSF at odds, immediate international intervention is crucial to halt the conflict and stabilize Sudan's economy. |
